Family Connection in the Mountains | Utah Retreat | Unraveled Academy | Chilliwack, BC Family Photographer

As the Unraveled team is in Destin, Florida hosting the Escape retreat this weekend it has me missing my time with everyone in Utah. I can’t wait to see what everyone will create from this weekend.

And speaking of creating at the retreats, we had the pleasure of learning from Melissa and Sarah on how they work with families. We had this beautiful family that simply made it easy to capture beautiful connections and sweet moments between them. Makelle and her family have the best style, they came looking adorably beautiful.

Styling isn’t always an easy process for many, including myself, but putting the effort into working on coordinating your family session outfits really does make a difference. You don’t have to go out and purchase all new outfits if you don’t want to, a lot of times we can make it work with outfits your family already has, it’s all about working with colours, textures, layers and your family’s comfort.

It’s worth the time and effort to get that effortless and beautiful flow to your photos.

Here’s a few quick tips when it comes to styling.

Colours: Coordinating matters

When you’re getting ready to pick out your clothes, think about your location and working with 3 to 4 colours that are complementary. Once you have that colour palette, choose different shades from that colour palette to dress your family. You want to coordinate, not match.
Stay away from neon colours, they like to reflect onto your skin and will cause strange colour casts.
It’s also best to keep to items without logos.
Neutral colour palettes are a great starting point, but don’t be afraid to add in some colour too, even if it’s just in your accessories.

Textures are amazing!

Add depth to your outfits by mixing up different types of textures. Start with a good base, a simple cotton shirt and then add some dimension with knits, silk, or maybe lace. A easy way to add different textures is to layer up!

Accessories are your friend

Hats, scarves, belts or necklaces are a great way of accessorizing and adding textures. Accessories are a great way for you to add a little bit of your personality into your session with pieces that stand out or mean something to you.

Last but not least: Be Comfortable

Yes, all the above tips are important and can really help your session get that beautiful look you’re aiming for, but my biggest tip is to be comfortable. Comfort trumps all. Find clothing that fits everyone well and allows movement for the kiddos, if your family isn’t comfortable, it will show.

If you’re having a hard time figuring out how to style everyone in your family, start with your outfit first and then build off of that to coordinate everyone else. And, don’t forget to ask for help, my job is to give you the session you want so ask me all the questions and I will help the best that I can.
