A Cozy Afternoon at Home | In-Home Maternity | Mission, BC Maternity Photographer

Winter sessions, they can be tricky when it comes to shooting outdoors and our Pacific Northwest weather. And since the weather can be unpredictable in our area during the winter months it can sometimes deter people from booking sessions for themselves in these months.

Don't allow the winter months to deter you from scheduling a session. We can craft a beautifully cozy ambiance with in-home sessions that will leave you enchanted.

It's all about hygge these days, and what could be better than feeling comfortable and cozy in your own home.

Ashleigh reached out for a maternity and newborn session but she wasn’t sure if having an outdoor maternity session would work for her because of our rainy and cold weather. We discussed back and forth about different options and I showcased how we could create a cozy in-home session that would be just as beautiful as any outdoor session.

Ashleigh and Cameron were a pleasure to capture, such a sweet couple. I loved hearing about their first date and how they got stuck in a snow storm for 4 hours and have been together every since. And even though Ashleigh mentioned that Cameron didn’t love getting in photos they both did amazing and were super easy going, they listened to my posing ques well and allowed themselves to get comfortable once I explained what I was looking for from them in each pose. I’m so glad I was able to capture these beautiful moments for these two and I can’t wait to share with you their gorgeous in-home newborn session next.

Sometimes we have an idea of what we want for our sessions and that can be hard to move past when weather is not cooperating. An in-home session isn’t for everyone, but both outdoor and indoor sessions can be beautiful, there’s no one perfect way to capture these moments in our lives. If you are considering capturing you and your family with an in-home session I have a few things that you should keep in mind.

1. What areas of your home would you like to utilize?

To create a cozy vibe we want to keep it simple, pick up to three areas of your home that you would love to incorporate into your session. We may use more spaces, but knowing ahead of time what areas you want to utilize will keep the session running smoothly.

We will utilize each space to it’s maximum capacity, so don’t worry if you think a room might be too small. I will make sure to move around and create from different angles to make the most out of your rooms and give you a variety of scenarios from one pose at a time.

Knowing what rooms you want to use beforehand will allow me to assess the light before our session and give you the best cozy and comfortable session and images.

2. Light

Lighting is an important part of any session, it will set the mood and create a different ambiance depending on how much of it enters your home.

Prior to our session I like to assess how the light is entering your home in the rooms we may be using. I will ask you for a simple task before you session, to send me a few images of the rooms you are interesting in using, or if timing works for both parties we can communicate via video chat so that you can show me the rooms during certain times of the day. This will let me know if I need to bring extra light with me and will also give me an idea of how the light falls in your space which in turn will allow for a smooth running session.

3. Styling

Finally, we will discuss styling to achieve a cozy ambiance; it's important to maintain a relaxed look, opting for attire you'd typically wear at home that also looks great in photos. What do you feel comfortable wearing? I don't want you to feel uneasy in your outfit. Together, we will craft a style that complements you and your family, allowing you to move with ease and feel relaxed. I've written a brief blog post with several tips for styling your upcoming session — feel free to check it out here! I'm always here to answer any questions to help us develop a cohesive look for your session.

You don't need to purchase an entirely new wardrobe for your session; we'll collaborate to style using what you already have, perhaps adding just an item or two to complete the ensemble. It's about striking a balance with colors and textures that harmonize well and bring depth to your photographs.

Whether it's a couple's, maternity, or family session, the atmosphere of an in-home session can be much more relaxed since it's within the comfort of your own home, allowing everyone to feel more at ease to be themselves.
